Bleach Backgrounder: Glossary

This article includes in-character information for the D&D campaign, Seven Days to the Wolves. It is almost entirely copied from the Wikipedia article on the subject, though it has been edited to suite the "alternate universe" setting of the game. No claim of ownership is made over this information, which is entirely derived from the anime/manga series Bleach, by Kubo Tite.

These are terms not explained elsewhere in the backgrounder – both Japanese and English – which are common to the Bleach setting.

Nameless zanpakutou carried by shinigami who cannot gain entrance into the Gotei 13.
The final form of a shinigami's zanpakutou. Bankai represents a tremendous level of power, and attaining it normally takes upwards of ten years. Even once it has been achieved, it usually takes many years to master.
Centre 46
A division of Soul Society's leadership, stationed directly below the royalty. It consists of forty wise men/women and six judges gathered from all around Soul Society.
Chain of Fate
A connection between the soul and the physical body, which appears quite literally as a chain. While it is connected, the soul itself cannot die. When the chain is cut, the chain begins to erode from the severed end. If it reaches the chest, a hole will form in the body, and the soul will become a hollow.
One of the characters that enters the body when a Soul Candy (see below) is taken. There is a large demand for the duck and dog variety, but the most popular is Chappy the rabbit.
The crack between the living world and Soul Society. Inside it is filled with a current called 'Kouryuu' which can stop souls from moving in order to prevent intruders.
A device used by shinigami in the human world. It appears to be a cellular phone, but is actually a disguised radar for hollows which can also receive orders from Soul Society.
Earth-bound spirit
A spirit which is assimilated with a particular area. It will only show itself when someone trespasses on its territory.
"Limit". When captain and vice-captain shinigami come to the living world, in order to prevent unnecessary influence, their power is reduced by 80%. This is symbolized by a patch bearing their squad number.
An artificial body which is physically comparable to a normal human. If a shinigami needs to stay in the human world for an extended period, or to interact with ordinary humans, a gigai grants them a material form.
"White strike". Bare-handed military combat, commonly used by the Special Forces but practised by many Gotei 13 shinigami as well.
A device Urahara Kisuke created whilst he was President of the Technological Development Bureau. This device allows a Shinigami to take on the qualities of a Hollow, or vice-versa. The Hougyoku was considered extremely dangerous, and Urahara Kisuke was exiled to the real world for his creation. It existence was then concealed by those in command – it is unknown to all but a few very important shinigami, and Urahara himself.
"Walking Method". This school of techniques covers methods to assist movement, and is considered necessary to those using hakuda. It is not a direct offensive method, but the advantages it can lend to a fight are obvious. Those who master hohou are able to make high speed movements that can't be traced by the eye, called shunpo.
Hollow Bounty
A reward offered to encourage shinigami to hunt particularly dangerous hollows.
A distinctive hair accessory worn by nobles as a status symbol.
Shinigami magic, also known as "Demon Arts". Kidou is split into two schools – Hadou and Bakudou. Bakudou are mainly used to restrain a target; however, there are some auxiliary spells that can be used for defence or communication. Hadou are mainly used for direct attacks on an opponent. The spells are numbered 1 through 99, and increase in power and difficulty of casting as the number increases. Some of the higher order bakudou not only bind the target, but are also capable of attacking offensively. These spells are classified as fuusatsugata ("deadly binding type"). When a shinigami masters kidou, they are able to cast spells hastily by bypassing the incantation for the spell. To gain this high level of power, a shinigami must go through intense training.
Menos Grande
A Gigantic hollow that is born from hundreds of hollows that pile and mix into one being. Said to be equivalent in power to a captain-level shinigami.
Operation Spearhead
A project studying the development of mod souls. Discontinued.
"Spirit Pressure". The energy in a soul that can be used to attack. The amount of reiatsu a soul has is linked with the soul's spiritual awareness, and the strength of its resolve. As long as the reiatsu and reiryoku of a soul remain strong, the soul will have a constant wave of strength. Reiatsu can become a shield to deflect attacks from the enemy if the defender's reiatsu is much larger than the attacker's. The Reiatsu of a certain individual has a distinct "feel" or "flavour" that can be recognised by those who are familiar with it. Some are more distinct than others, however, and ease of recognition depends on the individual.
"Spirit Laws". The laws which shinigami must obey.
"Spirit Threads". A technique for identifying spiritual auras in the atmosphere, performed by compressing them into visible "threads". Generally only high ranked shinigami are able to see or touch them. The reiraku of shinigami are coloured crimson, while those of normal souls are white.
"Spirit Power". The power obtained when you become a spirit. It is possible to be born with reiryoku.
The main substance that comprises a soul.
An item which resembles a crystal ball. By providing reiatsu to the core, the user can create a strong barrier around themselves.
Souls which enter Soul Society improperly (without the guidance of shinigami). Essentially viewed as invaders.
A mineral which can completely block reiatsu.
A tower which serves as a prison for extremely dangerous and condemned shinigami. As it faces the Soukyoku, its other name is the "Tower of Repentance".
A temporary door between the human world and Soul Society. Any zanpakutou has the ability to unlock this gate, though it lasts no more than a few minutes each time.
The "released" form of a zanpakutou, achieved by learning the sword's name and command word. All seated officers are expected to have achieved shikai.
Shinigami Academy
A school established by 1st division captain Yamamoto, to train young shinigami. While not all shinigami (particularly nobles) have attended the academy, it is by far the most reliable route to enter the Gotei 13, especially for those living in Rukongai.
A Kidou power used to render someone with low spiritual power unconscious.
"Flash Release". A fighting style which combines Hakuda and Kidou. It is an extremely powerful technique developed by Yoruichi and and Soifon, though its existence has not been revealed to most shinigami due to its dangerous nature.
"Flash Step". A technique which allows a shinigami to move extraordinarily quickly – akin to deportation over short distances. To those who cannot follow, Shunpo appears to make the user vanish and reappear.
A sacred, halberd-like weapon used in executions. The Soukyoku does not simply destroy a shinigami's form and cause them to be reborn in the human world, but rather erases their soul completely. Only shinigami who have committed truly grievous offences are condemned to be executed by the Soukyoku.
Soul Burial
The main part of a shinigami's duty in the human world; the method by which a shinigami can send a benevolent or defeated soul to Soul Society.
Soul Candy
Technically called "Gikongan", but renamed three years ago by the Shinigami Women's Association, led by chairwoman Kusajishi Yachiru. This is a small pill which forcibly pulls the user's spirit from the body. Useful for souls that have died but refuse to let go of their bodies, as well as for moving in and out of a gigai. Soul Candy also contains an artificial soul which inhabits the user's body or gigai while their own soul is absent, complete with their own personalities. The three most popular varieties are Chappy (rabbit), Yuki (duck), and Pebbles (dog). Other kinds available are Diana (snake), Alfred (skeleton), Claudia (bird), Ginnosuke (cat), Gringo (panda), Bruce (monkey), Kaneshiro (frog), and Staina (seal).
A substance which, when consumed, helps the user synchronise with their gigai. It is usually only used in problem situations, however, since over-synchronisation can be painful and dangerous.
A unique doll-like item developed by Urahara Kisuke, and unknown to soul Society at large. It can forcefully materialize the soul of a Zanpakutou, giving the user the chance to attain bankai much more quickly than would otherwise be possible.
A backpack-like object developed by Urahara Kisuke. When the user channels reiatsu into it, it sprouts wings rather like a hang-glider, and can be used to fly. A rare item, but unlike some of Urahara's other inventions, not actually a secret.
"Cutting Technique". Combat using a zanpakutou.
The name for the four basic combat techniques of the shinigami (hakuda, hohou, kidou, and zanjutsu).
