10th Division

Until captain Hitsugaya's promotion, the 10 division had effectively fallen by the wayside – not officially dissolved, but without a captain and without a purpose. It was clearly a double-edged sword when given to Hitsugaya – although it was a gesture of recognition for his talents, it was no gift. Command is still waiting for a distinct purpose to emerge from Hitsugaya's leadership, and in the mean time, the 10th division seems to be assigned to whatever anybody else doesn't want to do.

Captain: Hitsugaya Toushirou

By far the youngest captain ever appointed to the Gotei 13, Captain Hitsugaya was a prodigy who possessed a great amount of spiritual power even before he became a shinigami. It is said that he was brought to the shinigami academy from Rukongai by Matsumoto Rangiku, who would later become his vice-captain. True to this background, Hitsugaya's great strength is mostly in his natural abilities and his intuition, and his formal training and command of kidou is less than magnificent.

Histugaya is known to be overly serious and bad-tempered, possibly as a means of compensating for his youth and childish image - he is often frustrated by those around him treating him like a child, despite his status. This is a particular contrast to his vice-captain, though they seem to be very close. Hitsugaya is seen as a very noble-minded young man, however, and obviously does not take his duties as a shinigami lightly.

Hitsugaya is probably the most visually distinct of all the captains, mostly because he's so short, even for a young boy. He has white, spiked hair and blue-green eyes, which evokes his ability of controlling ice and water. He wears standard captain's clothing, save for a green sash around his shoulders which holds his oversized zanpakutou.

Zanpakutou: Hyourinmaru (lit. "ice ring", idiomatically "full moon")

Hyourinmaru is the strongest of all water-ice element zanpakutou in Soul Society. When sealed, it looks like an overly large katana, possibly a nodachi, with a crossguard in the shape of a four-pointed star; Hitsugaya is unusual in that he carries it over his back, though this is probably because of the blade's size compared to its wielder. Hyourinmaru's sheath conveniently dissolves whenever he draws his sword.

Hyourinmaru's shikai command is "sit upon the frozen heavens". In its shikai, Hyourinmaru itself remains the same, but gains a crescent-shaped blade attached to the hilt by a chain. It also allows Hitsugaya to control water and ice; the slashes created by Hyourinmaru gives off an immense amount of spirit power which overflows from the tip of the blade, creating a flow of ice vaguely shaped like Hyourinmaru's dragon spirit. The dragon flies at opponents and instantly freezes anything it touches. The chain-blade also freezes anything Hitsugaya traps with it.

Hyourinmaru's bankai, named Daiguren Hyourinmaru (lit. "Great Crimson Lotus Ice Ring"), causes ice to flow from Hyourinmaru onto Hitsugaya, forming into wings, claws and a tail. In addition to flight, the wings can be used as a shield.

Vice-captain: Matsumoto Rangiku

Vice-Captain Matsumoto has a reputation for being a slacker, who doesn't like paperwork and loves to drink sake. Her easygoing and free-spirited personality is in sharp contrast with the serious Hitsugaya, but the two seem to be quite close, regardless. Rangiku is almost constantly by his side and has shown her loyalty to him on several occasions. While she seems somewhat self-centered, Matsumoto is sensitive to the feelings of others, and can be extremely serious when needed. As a vice-captain, she is also more than capable if it comes down to fighting.

Rangiku is a remarkably attractive woman with long, wavy, strawberry-blonde hair (worn short in her youth), icy blue eyes, and a beauty spot to the right of her mouth. Her most distinctive feature is her voluptuous figure, however; she's not the least bit modest about her appearance, frequently referring or complaining about her endowments in casual conversation. She dresses in the garb typical of shinigami, though her robes hang loose enough for her ample bosom to be revealed. She wears a necklace and a pink scarf over her shoulders, and her vice-captain's armband is worn on her uniform's sash, as opposed to around the arm.

Zanpakutou: Haineko (lit. "Ash Cat")

Its sealed form is a straight-bladed wakizashi whose guard is in the shape of a cat's head, as its name suggests. Its shikai command is "growl". In its shikai, Haineko dissolves into ash, which Matsumoto can then control. The ash can cut through objects as easily as a sword would (similar in principle to Kuchiki Byakuya's Senbonzakura), though it seems there are other ways to fight with it as well.
