Adherent Spells

Spells in this section are solely or primarily for the Adherent class.

Adhering Weapon

Transmutation [See Text]
Level: Adherent 1
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Target: Weapon touched
Duration: 1 minute/level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

A blessing is of any type – be it from a source evil, chaotic, or lawful. Adherents of all alignments know this spell by many names – Truebiting, Chance's Defiance, Sacred Blow, - but they all mean the same spell. When this spell is cast, the Adherent chooses an alignment that opposes part of her own – and it is against creatures of that alignment that this weapon strikes true.

All critical rolls against foes of the designated alignment are automatically successful. The weapon negates the damage reduction of creatures of this alignment and is capable of striking incorporeal creatures of this alignment as if it had a +1 enhancement bonus. Also, the weapon is considered blessed, which means it has special effects on certain creatures. Individual arrows or bolts can be transmuted, but affected projectile weapons (such as bows) don't confer the benefit to the projectiles they shoot.

This transmutation can't affect any weapon that already has a magical effect related to critical hits.

When you use this spell, it is a spell of the type opposing the alignment chosen; therefore, a Lawful Neutral Adherent cannot choose to strike true against Lawful opponents, as that would make this spell a [Chaotic] spell.

Sacrosanct Weapon

Evocation [See Text]
Level: Adherent 4
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Target: Weapon touched
Duration: 1 round/level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

This spell allows the character to channel the power of their faith, their god, or their ideals into a weapon the character chooses. The weapon acts as a +5 magic weapon and deals an additional +2d6 holy damage against opponents of an alignment opposing the Adherent's, chosen at the casting of the spell; the Adherent may choose an alignment that opposes part of her own alignment – so a Lawful Good adherent could choose 'Any Chaotic' or 'Any Evil', for example.

A weapon so imbued with power emits a ward that protects creatures within 10 feet. This ward protects a creature from attacks by creatures of the chosen alignment, from mental control, and from summoned or conjured creatures. The ward has three major effects:

  • First, the subjects get a +2 deflection bonus to AC and a +2 resistance bonus on saves. Both these bonuses apply against attacks made by creatures of the chosen alignment.
  • Second, the barrier blocks any attempt to possess the warded creatures or to exercise mental control over the creature. The protection does not prevent a gaining mental control over a warded character, but it prevents anyone from mentally commanding the protected creature. The barrier keeps out a possessing life force but does not expel one if it is in place before the spell is cast. This second effect works regardless of alignment.
  • Third, the ward prevents bodily contact by summoned or conjured creatures of the chosen alignment. This causes the natural weapon attacks of such creatures to fail and the creatures to recoil if such attacks require touching the warded creature. The protection against contact by summoned or conjured creatures ends if the warded creature makes an attack against or tries to force the barrier against the blocked creature. Spell resistance can allow a creature to overcome this protection and touch the warded creature.

If the ward ends, the sword creates a new one on the character's turn as a free action. The spell is automatically cancelled 1 round after the weapon leaves the character's hand for any reason. The character cannot have more than one weapon so imbued at a time.

If this spell is cast on a magic weapon, the powers of the spell supersede any that the weapon normally has, rendering the normal enhancement bonus and powers of the weapon inoperative for the duration of the spell. This spell is not cumulative with bless weapon or any other spell that might modify the weapon in any way.

This spell does not work on artifacts.

When this spell is used to empower a weapon against creatures of a particular alignment, the spell has the opposite alignment type. Therefore, if a Chaotic Evil Adherent casts Sacrosanct Weapon on a weapon, empowering it against Lawful creatures, it is a Chaotic spell.
